| Bertie goes to the Southpaws Playschool these days maybe four days a week. She was becoming a recluse .. kinda a hermit crouching under the bed during day and hiding from the world until I got home. At Southpaws, she is well taken care of by a nice gung-ho dogs couple named Tim and Sonya…Sonya doesn’t want to see Marley and Me because she says it glorifies irresponsible dog raising…Tim is not quite so serious… the “school” is a large warehouse on South Lamar Boulevard, one of the busiest streets in Austin during rush hour. It takes me a half hour to get there and the drive brings out the worst in me. I feel like I am back in New Jersey navigating I-80. So, I am trying different ways that will contribute to my serenity rather than send me to work with a huge desire for vengeance. I take different routes, listen to my Spanish CD’s, and try to plan my day rather than worry about the jerk who won’t let me in to the stream of traffic or the one who cuts me off or the semi that tailgates me. But I think Bertie is the better off for getting out if the house. It’s Thursday and there is a long weekend coming up. Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. | | |
| I learned how to operate a defibrillator today. I got all refreshed on CPR so all in all it was a productive day. I had a conversation with Huntley on Skype and pondered how I will be able to take in three weddings and a Blair Reunion all far away. There will be much dinero involved. But as Scarlett O’Hara would say “Tomorrow is another day.” Or was it “I’ll never be hungry again”…hmmmm? Or maybe both. Goal: To develop trust like Bertie. It’s amazing. | | |
| I really loved this movie. Marley is a rogue in the form of a Golden Labrador and it’s his life story and those of the family he lives with. Beware that life comes to an end however and that part was very tough reminding me of the many times in my life, my best friends, Oscar, Sam, Duff, Saffie, and Jodi slipped away. Bertie got a big hug when I got home. We had some great Nachos and I a Steak Sandwich at the Alamo Draft House where we saw the film. By the way, the show was packed. I guess we are a nation of sentimentalist dog lovers. Today, I am serving on the altar and learning CPR at Church. Bertie will snooze the afternoon away listening to public radio.

| I have just learned how to post to my blog from Microsoft Word. How cool is that? I just type it up in a Word document and send it off to Blogger. However, to get it to Xanga, I still gotta cut and paste (sigh). I’ll have to work on that. We are off to see Marley and Me tonight at the Alamo Draft House. Mr. Obama becomes President in 10 more days. | | |
| Two weeks ago, I left AT&T and went to work for St. David’s Episcopal Church in Austin. It’s my home parish, so the situation is not entirely strange to me. I call myself an administrative assistant but I spend most of my time at the front desk answering the phones and getting people where they need to be when they enter the building. I also schedule the use of rooms, order supplies, and react to a lot of other requests for services of one kind or another. The complex occupies an entire city block and includes a parking garage. On any given Sunday, over a 1000 people attend services and there are a bazillion different classes, lectures, .meals, meetings, groups, symposia …you name it, going on every day. The building contains two “churches” or “sanctuaries” and several chapels. There is even a gym in the basement where currently a film is being made. The downtown Rotary Club has offices there and there is even a preschool on the first floor. Whew! It’s a lot to keep track of. But after two weeks and a week of soloing, I feel like I am going to like it. I’m in my honeymoon period and everyone is MOST supportive. I expect that to continue although without quite as much attention. More to come. | | |
